What is an electrolyte?

Electrolytes are simply minerals that carry an electric charge known as an ion.

They regulate nerve and muscle function, hydrate the body, balance blood acidity and pressure, and help rebuild damaged tissue. Muscles rely on the movement of electrolytes through the fluid inside, outside, or between cells.

A muscle needs calcium, sodium, and potassium to function properly.  When these substances become imbalanced, that is when things start breaking down.

The sodium-to-potassium ratio is critical to cardiovascular performance. Most of the time, it takes every cell in your body constantly “working” in order to maintain this balance.

Consider that our bodies actually only need about 200 mg of sodium a day for survival, and we already receive this (and more) through our everyday diets. In fact, athletes today on a typical western diet are consuming nearly twice the sodium they should be while only getting about 1/2 the potassium they require.
